Congrats to former Arizona Cardinals Running Back Emmitt Smith, who was elected to the Hall of Fame today. He may have played for some other team as well.

I've actually been trolling the Cowboys lovers I know by sending that message out along with a huge photo of Emmitt in his Cardinals jersey.

First half: sucked
Second half: pretty interesting

Kinda interesting that the Colts lost because of Manning. It's a good thing the rested their starters or else they would have been the second team to go undefeated in the playoffs and lose the Superbowl.

They might have won if they hadn't rested. At least the Saints tried to win every game.

I blame Caldwell for running the ball three straight times right before the half after they had stuffed the Saints on 4th and 1, allowing the Saints to get the ball back and still get 3 points anyway.

That was the Saints. They went for it on fourth and goal and when they didn't make it, Manning really didn't have much room to throw or room for a mistake.

The second half...The Colts just looked a bit off on offense. Fun game though. The Saints definitely took it.

Matt-

Did you see that 98 yard touchdown drive earlier. There was plenty of room for Manning to throw. Caldwell just tightened up.

I'm glad for the Saints, though.

Yot

It's a tough call on the 2 with only two minutes left in the half. If they had given the ball up there, it would have been a guaranteed 7 instead of 3 they ended up holding them to.

That said, yeah, could have been bolder.

I loved the unexpected onside kick too. Good time to call that and they managed to snag it.

I was rooting for the Saints, but I had to go play hockey when it was 10-0 Indy so I didn't get to see a single Saints score.  Glad they won though, good for the city and good for Drew Brees.

Six NHL teams to open in Europe next season:

NEW YORK -- A record six teams will open their 2010-11 regular seasons in Europe, the NHL and the players' association announced Tuesday.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild will be headed for Finland, where they will play two regular-season games Oct. 7-8 in Helsinki. The Columbus Blue Jackets and San Jose Sharks will begin their seasons with two games Oct. 8-9 in Stockholm, Sweden. The Boston Bruins and Phoenix Coyotes will be based in Prague, Czech Republic, for two games Oct. 9-10.

It is the fourth year in a row that the NHL will begin the season in Europe. Each of the teams has players who will be playing in their homelands.

Tuomo Ruutu, Joni Pitkanen and Jussi Jokinen of the Hurricanes, and Mikko Koivu, Niklas Backstrom and Antti Miettinen of the Wild are from Finland. Four Blue Jackets -- Fredrik Modin, Sammy Pahlsson, Anton Stralman and Kristian Huselius -- will be returning to their homeland, as will Douglas Murray and Niclas Wallin of the Sharks. The Czech Republic is the original home of Bruins David Krejci and Vladimir Sobotka, along with Zbynek Michalek, Petr Prucha, Martin Hanzal, Robert Lang and Radim Vrbata of the Coyotes.

Well, it was a pretty opening ceremony, but compared to the Beijing one, kinda on the dull side. Except for the punk tap dancing fiddlers.  But you can't have Sarah, KD, and an opera singer in the same 3 hour space and not expect me to fall asleep.

Yesterday, I decided it was probably a good idea to check out the shenanigans happening downtown. After all, it's not like the Olympics happen in your city every year. Me and some friends all went down with our cameras to take some pictures. Linkage. I thought they turned out (mostly) well, considering I don't know the first thing about photography.

Yay! Someone else who shoots with a Pentax! What model, Squeaky?

I have an older K100D. I got it real cheap through work ($400CAD for the body plus an 18-55 lens). My buddies were both using the K7 something-or-other. The nice thing about all of us using Pentax is we were swapping around lenses all afternoon.

This one's pretty awesome.

Yeah, that's my favourite of the bunch. They did a really great job with the cauldron. Stunk like kerosene, though. I also like this one. I was using my friends lens (don't remember which one) for it, and for a quick snapshot, turned out pretty well.

yotsuya (#80):
David Carr?

He's a definite upgrade over Hill and might be an upgrade over Smith, if the OL can protect him.  The Niner front office has said they're not going after any of the big fish this offseason, and this move fits that.  I expect the big holes on the OL and DL will be filled in the draft.

They expect the OL to continue to be a problem and brought in Carr for whenever the other two guys can't get up anymore.

Heh. I hope the Niners cut Hill. I'd pick him up as a backup to Leinart. Remember, he went 10-6 as a starter. Sure, he was 3-3 as a starter this year, but Smith was only 5-5 this year.

I like Hill, but my impression this season was that defenses have figured him out and were crowding the short routes, and he didn't have the confidence to go over the top.  We basically had Gore running into 8 and 9 man fronts and when they went with the pass, they were still in position.  Smith has his own problems, mainly not having Hill's intangibles, but he was at least able to hit on longer passes which opened up the run game a bit.

Mainly though, I think neither Hill nor Smith is a complete QB or ever will be, and we can only have one backup (because no way do I want to see Nate Davis pushed off the roster), so one of them has to go.  Personally, I'm hoping they don't cut anyone till training camp so we end up with the best two.  If Carr can't push anyone off the roster then chalk it up to a failed experiment and cut his ass; there's no salary cap implications this year.

Hill's cheap enough for them to keep until camp, but like I said, I hope he becomes available. Carr just seemed like an odd pickup.

Last night at hockey I picked the puck up at the offensive blueline, put it through a defender's skates and went around him, poked it past a second guy, picked it back up again in time to put it through the feet of a third guy, then went in alone on the net and put it off the post, off the goalie's back and in. The ref waved it off because he didn't see it cross the line before the goalie pulled it back, but I don't care that much. It was the best goal I've ever scored, and it did cross the line.
