The ghost of gaming future?
February 23rd 2004, 10:38 CET by Gunp01nt No doubt you have all heard about Infinium Labs and their infamous Phantom console. First announced in 2002 as a grand collection of big promises, the Phantom console has been the victim of a lot of skepticism, ending up third in the Wired Vaporware Awards of 2003. I'm sure most people have also read the revealing HardOCP article in which Infinium Labs' CEO Timothy Roberts turned out to have a very shady business past. Infinium Labs is now threatening to sue HardOCP over this article. What surprised me was that the driving force behind the lawsuit is apparently not CEO Tim Roberts, but Chief Operating Officer (COO) Kevin Bachus. Bachus, who seems to have become the main spokesperson for Infinium Labs, used to work for Microsoft, promoting the DirectX and XBox gaming platforms among developers. Bachus is reported to have personally persuaded over 200 game development companies to develop for the XBox. There was a long time when the Phantom did seem nothing more than empty promises to lure in investor cash. But under Bachus' guidance, the project finally seems to be taking shape and is expected to be fully demonstrated at this year's E3. many skeptics have been silenced by the mere fact that Infinium Labs is no longer operating under radio silence, but actually seems to be producing something. Myself, I've been wondering what the involvement of Kevin Bachus could do for the console. What do you think? Could this hotshot who's proven himself in the past, lift this console into the market? Could Infinium Labs establish a beachhead between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo? What would it take for this to happen? And more importantly, is the Phantom console and its on-demand delivery of games a glance at where computer gaming is headed, PC gaming included? |

I use two monitors at work and it really helps - but more would be nice. I often have several programs open for one project, and each of those programs has lots of little sub windows for options and such. It would be nice to have everything on its own monitor, so my project doesn't ever get cluttered up with windows. I'm fighting terrorism by playing violent video games!

A refresh on the second link helps. I'm a fuckin' genius! |

Now it works, but I still don't care. What button combo address that issue? Only as much as you deserve.

Ctrl-Alt-S-T-F-U. I want a horse that ribbits and a frog that neighs... oink oink oink

I think that might only work for euro keyboards. Only as much as you deserve.

No, no, it works globally. And gives access to a very special unlockable Windows feature. I want a horse that ribbits and a frog that neighs... oink oink oink

I have a second monitor at home, but the only time I use it is when I watch movies while surfing or working. -Jeremy

I only use my second monitor to watch movies when I'm skydiving or downhill mountainbiking. Only as much as you deserve.

I seriously have a hard time using a computer with less than two 19" monitors these days, and frequently find myself wanting three or more. My work system has two 19's and a 15, and my home has two 19's. These systems are approximately 20 feet from each other, since I work from home. -chris |
|
I use one 17" monitor for work. I am a programmer. |

I'm not qualified to use anything more complicated than a stapler. Plan to hitch a ride with the river
Cuz deep down plumbing life is too cramped for me |

There was a version of doom hacked up that could synch 3 machines and display front and `side` views. Anyone else find that its a bitch to use a larger monitor, then have to go back to using a smaller one? 19" is the smallest I can put up with now. Do not go gently into that good night.

Anyone else find that its a bitch to use a larger monitor, then have to go back to using a smaller one? 19" is the smallest I can put up with now. I agree. Although I'm using a 17" at home. I've been considering picking up a 19", or even a 21". But there's not enough room on my desk for two of 'em. I'd go flat panel, but those are a little expensive. My name it is Sam Hall an' I hate you, one and all. An' I hate you, one and all. Damn your eyes.

I'd rather have two 17" monitors than one 21" However, I'd rather have three 21" monitors, all things being equal. Or better yet, three Apple Cinema Displays. Yow. -chris |

Darkseid: It was actually a built-in feature of Doom. I set it up at work once. Good for the novelty value, and not much more. 9 years later you're the fat kid with his face pressed against the window of The Industry. - crash

Speaking of Doom I found the original shareware disks that I got when I ordered and tried to copy them to my machine for nostalgia sake. Disk 2 was bad so I threw them all out. So much for nostalgia. It was probably for the best. |

#127 Darkseid-D There was a version of doom hacked up that could synch 3 machines and display front and `side` views. It was version 1.2, and it wasn't a hack. It also wasn't particularly useful (I tried it). I went from dual monitors back to one...I don't really notice anymore. Six is excessive for any human ever. Chris, you don't use a split-style keyboard? How do you live? It's my life. It never ends.
|
|
I don't either. And I live just fine. "For those who have come to grow, the whole world is a garden. For those who have come to learn, the whole world is a university. For those who have come to know God, the whole world is a prayer mat." - M. R. Bawa Muhaiyadeen

#152 jafd Chris, you don't use a split-style keyboard? How do you live? I don't type the correct way. I suppose if I did, I could do like 150 WPM or whatever, instead of the 110-ish I can do right now. However, I also don't have any sort of repetetive stress disorders despite over a decade of constant computer use, because I'm constantly shifting positions. So whatever. -chris |
|
I *HATE* those split-style keyboards. Although they're supposed to be "natural", they most certainly do not feel like that to me. That's a beautiful way to go. Shot by Yot. In more ways than one. -mgns
|
|
I havea split at work and a regular at home. Doesn't seem to help me either way. -Jeremy
|
|
I type in more or less the correct way and find those split keyboards to be awful. Maybe if all you were doing was typing, but normal computer use involves having one hand using a mouse so it's often easier to use a single hand for little bits of typing and hitting assorted keyboard shortcuts. And they look like they're sort of swelling. We are the Village Green Preservation Society.

|
Two weeks of adjustment for me and now I'll never go back. I hear some people like sleeping on wooden planks, too. It's my life. It never ends.

Split keyboards are of the devil. I'm fighting terrorism by playing violent video games!
