CS:S Beta
August 15th 2004, 16:52 CEST by ProStyle

By the time this gets voted on the quoted dates will have already passed. The discussion is really intended for gameplay impressions from the CS:Source Beta and other comments about the Source engine after we've all played a few rounds. The Half Life 2 preloading content is a relatively moot point, seeing as how there's nothing to comment on except full release date speculation.

CS-Source isn't meant to innovate anything, just update CS a little.  For innovation, (theoretically at least) we're meant to look to HL2 itself.

I know you're just dangling the bait, Bob.....but

Maybe I'll actually play CS for the first time.

So Mr. Graphics Don't Matter will maybe actually try CS for the first time, now that it has better graphics?

no, No, NO!

I, for one, much look forward to CS: Source and will probably have to buy that damn single player CS just so I can play it...  of course, that's only if I can find it cheap somewhere.

Or, you could wait until HL2 comes out...

This over the olympics? Geez, and that Serb/Argentina basketball game had a great ending.

I didn't think I'd be interested, but the swimming so far has been pretty cool.

Knowing the affinity of the 'Crap for Crimsonland/Mutant Storm style games, I thought I'd post a link to Minebot Arena. One of the better indie games I've played... Hell, one of the only indie games I've played in a long time.

CS:S in motion really shows you the improvements they put into it, graphically. I just want to play it because of the ragdoll effects.

Also, CS2 is what you should be looking forward to, for graphics.

I must say too that it amuses me to no end to see the 'Dreamteam" get it's ass waxed. You know, it was cool the first time they had the pro's play the game. But I don't really want to see them in the Olympics.

Of course, I'm not one of those guys that thinks the americans have to win or whatever. I just like see cool moments and watching people who are in better shape than I'll ever be kick some ass.

So HL2 content preloads before the actual launch. Anyone wants to make a bet how many days it'll take before the leaked HL2 engine gets released with the final content?

As people have found out, the old stolen build doesn't work with the newer assets. Obviously, that won't stop people trying. They've already cracked the CS:Source beta and made it playable online. Until yesterday, when Valve changed the server protocol.

Anyway, the beta itself is kind of fun, although it's spoiled somewhat by people exploiting a map bug and climbing into the sky where they can shoot people without being shot back.

The physics are amusing at times.

Speaking of underdogs, I watched the Iraq:Portugal soccer match the other night and that was about the most exciting game I've seen in a long while, and probably among the most inspiring sports stories I've heard.  The Iraqis went from huddling in gunfire-riddled homes a month ago to being flown out secretly by an RAAF C130 under cover of darkness to beating the Euro runner-up team 3:2.  It was awesome - I was jumping up and down and screaming, and the US Navy family next door were scandalised that I was rooting for Iraq.

They had a striker who got pretty beat up by Portugal's defense and by the second half was falling down whenever anyone got near him.  Never got a card though.

My friends forced me to watch the opening ceremony to the Olympics. I thought the initial parade of Greek myth and history was well done, but then the ensuing four hours of sportsmen wandering around waving was one of the most tedious TV spectacles I've witnessed.

Seems odd then that NBC would devote 3-4 channels to covering it then, since no one watches it.

I watched some swimming and boxing yesterday.  Olympic boxing is about the only boxing I can stand to watch any more.  Headgear, (generally) good officiating, skilled boxers, lots of rules to keep people from getting terribly hurt.  So far none of the ugliness of the Seoul Olympics boxing.
